You Are Not the Doer — Marvin Wilkerson on Surrender, Astrology, and the Soul's Plan
Master astrologer and hypnotherapist Marvin Wilkerson joins Erin Patten to explore why you are not the doer, how your soul chose your hardest lessons, and what it means to surrender without giving up.
You Are Not the Doer
I want to start with a confession, because I know so many of you carry the same one. I built my life on being the doer — the one who makes it happen, the woman who outworks, outplans, and outstrategizes the room. And every single time life cracked me open — the losses, the custody battle, my mother's illness — my first instinct was to grip harder. To fix it. To force it back into shape.
My guest this week has spent seventy-five years learning, teaching, and embodying the exact opposite. Marvin Wilkerson is a master evolutionary astrologer, a certified hypnotherapist, and the author of Soul Fusion Healing: Integrating Mind, Body, and Soul. And he will tell you, very plainly, that you are not the doer — that the very struggles you are fighting right now were chosen by you, at the level of your soul.
I know how that lands for a room full of builders. So stay with me. This is not permission to stop. It is permission to stop forcing. There is a difference, and it is everything.
The Reading That Flipped the Switch
Marvin's path began with a single reading at eighteen years old. He was still in his last year of high school, still inside what he calls “the programming” — an education system that, in his words, is designed to produce burger flippers, not free thinkers. Then his mother's own searching led him to a book: Think on These Things by Jiddu Krishnamurti.
Something switched off, and something else switched on. “I can do my own research,” he realized. “I can do my own learning.” This from a kid who had read exactly one book in high school — White Fang — and only started it halfway through because he hated reading. That one crack of curiosity became a lifelong hunger; at one point he was reading three or four books a week and, in his words, chewing them.
The real turn came in the nineties, working with his spiritual teacher, who handed him a phrase he has never put down: walk the talk, or throw the shit away. That was the moment learning became embodiment. “I am here to be a doer of what I've learned,” he said — which is a beautiful irony from a man whose central teaching is that you are not the doer. Hold both. They belong together.
The Book That Wrote Itself
Marvin whined about writing a book for twenty-five years. (His word — whined.) He'd get a chapter in, a few pages, then lose interest and abandon it. “That,” he told me, “is the case of trying to be the doer.”
Then he had a dream. In a hypnagogic state — that liminal place between waking and sleeping — he saw a page of words, clear as day, and heard a voice say: if we wanted you to write, this is how we'll give it to you. He released it completely. And two years ago, on vacation in Florida, it bit him. He started writing about the astrological times ahead, and the thread kept pulling. “The needle in the haystack became a haystack.” What poured out moved from the Hermetic principle — all is mind — all the way to quantum healing.
“The book wrote itself,” he said. “I don't take credit for it. If it sells, if it doesn't sell, it doesn't make any difference.” And you can feel that this is true for him — not a pose, not spiritual performance, but genuine detachment from outcome. That detachment is the whole teaching in miniature. He did the work, and he released the result. Most of us do the opposite: we skip the surrender and cling to the outcome, and then we wonder where all the pressure is coming from.
Beliefs Are Fiction — Why Seeking Beats Believing
As a boy, Marvin only read the red letters in the Bible — he wanted to know what Yeshua actually said, and nothing else. And he points out something most people skip right over: Yeshua never said read the Bible. He said seek.
So I asked him: what has a life of seeking taught you that a life of believing never could? His answer came through James Hillman, the psychologist: to be sane, we must recognize our beliefs as fiction. It is never about clutching a structure, a dogma, a belief. It is about letting reality be reality — a line he credits to Lao Tzu — and participating in it, observing it, taking it in, without bending it into what we wish it were.
This is where most of us get into trouble, he says. Our thinking hardens into a structured belief, and then we mistake the belief for reality — we stop seeing what is and start defending what we've decided. The invitation is lighter than that: hold your beliefs as fiction, and you get to stay in the moment, where life is actually happening. Stop thinking, he says, and end your problems.
“You Are Not the Doer” — What He Actually Means
Marvin tells CEOs, to their faces, that they are not the doer. They hate it. So I asked him to unpack it for the woman who built everything — or feels like she built everything — with her own two hands.
Before you arrive in this life, he explained, you sit with your teachers, guides, and angels and you present a life plan. You choose your parents. You choose the people you'll meet. You choose the lessons you need to experience. Your plan is approved, and you enter already carrying it.
And here is the part that reorganizes everything: desire does not come from your ego. It comes from your soul. Your desires are imprinted in you before you take your first breath. When Marvin says you are not the doer, he is not saying stop thinking or stop working hard. He is saying that roughly ninety-five percent of your reality is created by the subconscious — a force he calls a million times more powerful than the conscious, thinking mind. So why would you try to muscle your whole life into being from the remaining five percent? Follow the guidance instead. Follow the feeling, the intuition, the vision. Let the subconscious lay the neural pathway, and let that vision electrify the field around you — becoming, in his words, your principle of attraction and repulsion, adhesion and cohesion.
“You didn't do that,” he says. And once the ego stops flinching, that sentence stops being an insult. It becomes a rest.
You Chose This — Soul Groups, Karma, and the Lessons You Signed Up For
If our desires come from the soul, then so, in a sense, do our hardest chapters. I told Marvin what I tell you all the time: had I known that choosing my son's father would land me here — years in and out of custody court — I would have never spoken to that man.
He didn't flinch. There was something you derived from that, he said. Something you came to learn. Through participation, you gain a new perspective — a karmic lesson stretching back across lifetimes, where you may have been codependent, over-trusting, or too reliant on placing your values outside yourself.
And then he named free will honestly, which almost nobody does. You don't get to choose whether the lesson comes. You get to choose two things: your attitude, and your creative response. You can meet your life with a good attitude or a bad one — that's your free will. And you can use your creativity, in any moment, to work your way through the struggle, the pain, the conflict, and toward the joy on the other side. That part is genuinely yours.
Surrender Is Not Giving Up
Here's the fear I hear the most, and I named it for Marvin directly: people hear “you are not the doer,” and they panic that it means quit. Stop building. Go limp. So what is the actual difference between surrender and giving up?
He answered with a story from three days earlier. He has an estate home to sell — his late mother's house — and he'd been pushing hard for six months to force the sale. Then he had a dream, vivid and joyful, of a hundred women, a swirl of feminine energy, some of them long passed. He woke and asked what it meant, and his intuition answered: stop pushing to get what you want, and allow it to come to you.
That is the difference. Surrender is not going limp. It is releasing your grip on the outcome while staying fully inside your creative response. And — this is the piece I added, because I am living it too, right down to my own real-estate lesson — surrender includes the grief. When you don't get the exact thing you wanted, on the timeline you wanted it, there is a real loss there, and it deserves to be felt. The gripping is how we avoid the grief. The surrender is letting the grief move through, so that divine timing can move too.
You Are Not the Body — The Most Spiritual Thing Is to Be Human
One of Marvin's clients meditates five hours a day and still asked him why her life was falling apart. He told her to quit trying to be so spiritual. I get this one more than almost anything, so I asked him why.
Because we already are spiritual, he said. We are spiritual beings in a physical body — or, as David Hawkins puts it, “I'm not the body, I have a body.” Marvin is seventy-five, with new knees, a new hip, broken toes, a torn rotator cuff, and more aches than he can count. He does not organize his life around what's wrong with the body. He treats it well enough to keep doing the work he loves, and he lets the rest be what it is. Even Harvard, he notes, says pain is about fifty percent mental.
Then he took it somewhere that genuinely stopped me. Feelings, intuition, and visualization are the real powers — and, anatomically, the part of the brain that holds visualization sits right where a bonnet rests on the crown of your head, in the same region that registers pain. The overbrain can only hold one thing at a time. So when you're in pain and you build a vivid, positive vision, the pain has to recede. Vision and pain, sharing an address. He finds it almost funny that we evolved this way. I find it merciful.
Talking to Spirit, and Why You Can't Make It Up
Marvin talks to spirit out loud. He hears loved ones who've passed — an uncle by the water on a fishing trip. So I asked him where the line is between imagination and genuine communion, and whether the line even matters.
His answer was disarmingly practical. How often is your conscious, thinking mind right? Thirty, forty percent? And your intuition — seventy, eighty? So if you hear the conversation in your mind, why not let it be real? How is it going to hurt you?
As a hypnotist, he's spent decades proving that we cannot actually make things up. When he asks a client to “just imagine” the next moment, what surfaces is always rooted in real experience — sometimes this life, sometimes another. He once guided a young man who had blocked out a horrific car accident; by asking him to simply imagine opening the car door, the whole memory unwound, true and intact. The images we dismiss as “not what we wanted to see” are usually exactly the thread we were meant to follow.
Your Chart Is the Language of Energy
Marvin practices evolutionary astrology — not, he's quick to say, the pop, bubblegum, horoscope-app version. When you take your first breath, you take on the vibration of the universe in that exact moment. Your chart is a map of that energy: your talents, your abilities, the places you've used your energy beautifully, and the conflicts your own mind has created through misperception. It reads, in his words, like the best language we have for energy — no science knows more about energy than an astrologer does.
On our first call, he read my nodes in about ninety seconds — south node in Scorpio, north node in Taurus — and named the codependency and the power-and-control pattern I've spent a decade unwinding. He named it again in this conversation without even remembering he'd done it before, and my body confirmed it the way truth always does: somatically, before the mind can argue. That's how he knows a reading has landed. Not because he's the Wizard of Oz — his words — but because it triggers something real in you, and now you have language for the pattern and a direction to grow: toward your own authentic values, individuated, no longer sourcing your worth from outside.
The Feminine Is Rising
Near the end, Marvin said something I want every woman reading this to take into her body: women are coming into their power. The pendulum is swinging. And the chaos so many women are moving through right now is not a collapse — it is the birth of organized power. Out of chaos comes organization.
We each carry masculine and feminine within us, he said, and the feminine is where vision lives — relationship, foundation, the capacity to bring forth life. We've been male-dominated for roughly twenty-two hundred years, and that age is ending. We are moving into something more humanitarian, more intuitive, more balanced — an era where the feminine finally recognizes that her place in this world is equally powerful. To the woman who feels like she's drowning in the chaos rather than rising in it: this is the labor before the birth. You are not going under. You are being organized.
What You Can Do With This
If you take one thing from Marvin's seventy-five years, let it be this: you are allowed to let one hand off the wheel. Not because you're giving up — because you finally trust the blueprint.
Do the work. Follow the vision. Use your creativity. Then release the outcome, and let the grief move when the thing doesn't arrive the way you scripted it. Live in the moment. Live your excitement, follow your passion, and let go of the outcome — that was his answer, in the lightning round, to what the most spiritual thing a woman in business can do is. And when I asked him one last time — so, are you the doer? — he answered without a beat: Never.
That word landed on me like a bell. Never. Not once in seventy-five years has he believed the credit was his to take — and watching him say it, I understood that this is what freedom actually looks like. Not passivity. Not resignation. A man fully engaged with his life, working hard, loving his family, writing his book, tending his mother's house — and holding every bit of it with open hands. That is the invitation on the table for all of us: to stop confusing the grip with the work.
